Overview
The Nurture Elementary Program helps first through fifth grade students develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to help reduce the likelihood of developing childhood obesity. The goal is to help students develop positive relationships with food while building the ability and desire to make healthy choices about nutrition, hydration and exercise. It includes 35 monthly units of hands-on lessons, activities, fitness games and parent handouts. The goal is to help students develop positive relationships with food while building their ability and desire to make healthy choices about nutrition, hydration and exercise.
Key Topics and related Core Concepts establish a common vocabulary for discussing nutrition and wellness, which eases communication between grades and schools. The following Key Topics are discussed throughout the program:
- Eat mainly foods that nourish your body.
- Be physically active.
- Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables.
- Use MyPlate to create balanced meals and snacks.
- Pay attention to energy balance and portion control.
- Stay hydrated with water and milk.
The program includes five levels and a total of 35 monthly units. Each unit includes:
- A Lesson, 20 minute lessons for Levels 1 - 4 and 40 minute lessons for Level 5
- A P.E. Activity
- An optional Supplemental Activity that reinforces the Lesson while teaching Common Core Standards for English Language Arts or Mathematics
- A Parent Handout which helps the parents reinforce the concepts at home
Lesson concepts are introduced in the younger grades and applied with increasing sophistication in subsequent lessons and grades. Because of this, it takes 4 years to fully implement the program as designed.

Three models for teaching the program have been used successfully.
1. Classroom teachers teach the Lesson and Supplemental Activity and distribute the parent handout. Physical Education teachers teach the PE Activity.
2. Physical Education teachers teach all program components.
3. Nurture teaches the Lesson. Physical Education teachers teach the PE Activity. Classroom teachers teach the Supplemental Activity and distribute the parent handout.
